Temple incense, garland stalls, a mosque dome: Singapore by quarter.
The old quarters sit a short MRT ride apart, and each one is a different country on a plate. Then the bay, the island resort and the last village kampong. Six places to plant a day.
The eight days out Singapore sells most.

Singapore saves its best show for 8pm on the water.
Spectra throws lasers and fountains over Marina Bay at 8pm and 9pm, and Garden Rhapsody lights the Supertrees a few minutes earlier. The river cruises are timed around both. The three most popular ways to spend the evening.

Sentosa is Singapore’s playground, a short hop across the water.
Ride the cable car over from Mount Faber, the monorail from VivoCity, or walk the boardwalk. Then it is Universal Studios, a luge track down the hill and the Southern Islands a speedboat away.
Every Sentosa day →Singapore rain arrives at speed and leaves within the hour.
In the wet months the sky tends to break in the afternoon, hard enough to empty the streets and stop the bike tours. Keep an indoor booking in your pocket: a gallery, the waterfall inside Jewel at Changi, a kitchen that ends in lunch.
What a day out in Singapore costs, in three price bands.
The city has a reputation for expensive, and the hotel bill earns it. The days out are another story.

Three things you will only find in Singapore.
Every big city has a skyline and a food scene. A zoo that opens after dark, a waterfall inside an airport and a kampong on an island ten minutes off the coast are this one’s alone.

The Night Safari
It opened in 1994 as the first zoo in the world built to be seen after dark. The animals are nocturnal, the lighting is set to moonlight, and a tram runs the main loop while walking trails cut off into the trees. Leopards, tapirs and fishing cats are out and moving, which no daytime zoo can promise.

Jewel at Changi
Under a glass dome beside Terminal 1, the Rain Vortex drops forty metres from an opening in the roof, the tallest indoor waterfall anywhere. Terraces of forest climb the walls around it. Through the evening the water is lit in colour, and the canopy park above has hedge mazes and a bridge across the top.

Pulau Ubin
Ten minutes by bumboat from Changi Point, Ubin is what most of Singapore looked like before the towers. Houses on stilts, quarry lakes, rented bicycles and the Chek Jawa boardwalk out over the mangroves at low tide. Nobody arrives by car, because there is nowhere to drive one.

Four Singapore bookings that will not wait for you to land.
Most of this city runs on walk-up queues that move fast. These four run on entry times, show times and dated tickets, and the good slots go weeks out.
- 01Night Safari Tour with TransferThe park only opens after dusk, and every evening tour group arrives in the same hour. Fix the date and the transfer before you fly.
- 02SkyPark Observation Deck at Marina Bay SandsTickets carry an entry time, and the slots around sunset are the ones that vanish first.
- 03Singapore Starry Night Cruise, Garden Rhapsody & Spectra ShowSpectra runs at 8pm and 9pm. The cruises timed to watch it from the water sell out by departure, not by day.
- 04Universal Studios Singapore + Roundtrip TransfersTickets are dated, and weekends and school holidays bring the longest queues on the island.
By place: the quarters, the bay and the islands
